Volunteers Needed!

Do you have theater experience and miss the smell of the green room?
Do you have talents you can teach to children?
Do you just want to learn more about theatre than what you see from the audience?
Everyone’s needed! As a community theater, The Blue Parrot relies on you, a member of our community.  Let us know how you’re interested in helping (BoxOffice, Children’s Theatre . . .)

Volunteer Job Descriptions

  • Box Office Volunteers—(Two volunteers; approximately 10 hours)  Work with the Box Office Manager and House Manager prior to the show to ensure audience satisfaction. Sell tickets at the door for each performance. Requires taking admission money and keeping track of ticket sales.
  • Cast Shepherds—(For Children's Theatre - Two volunteers for every night of Tech Week and for each performance; approximately 3 hours per stint) This position requires that you know the scenes, so you can be cued actors to wait in the wings.  You will help with minor emergencies (costume tears, missing props, etc.) You also need to help remind the actors to keep quiet backstage, and help them clean up after each evening.  For younger casts, you may have to coordinate quiet backstage activities. You will need to be at the theater ˝ hour before each performance.
  • Costume Coordinator—(One or more volunteers; approximately 10 hours)  Work under the Costume Designer to find/make costume pieces, keep track of cast costume contracts, train volunteer dressers, and make sure the costumes are washed and returned to the correct places.
  • Costume Dresser—(One or more volunteers for every night of dress rehearsal and for each performance; approximately 3 hours per stint)  Help with quick changes and costume emergencies during dress rehearsals and performances.  Make sure the actors have hung them up after each performance.
  • Dance Captain—(One volunteer; approximately 10 hours) Usually a cast member, person in charge of dance routines after the Choreographer has taught the dances. Will coordinate with the Director if changes or additional practice is required.
  • Hostess/Host—(One volunteer; approximately 10 hours) Work with House Manager to plan intermission refreshments for performances- set up concession stand for intermission.  Can use volunteer ushers as intermission helps.
  • House Manager—(One volunteer; approximately 10 hours) Coordinate Box Office, Hostess/Host and Ushers to provide an enjoyable experience for the audience.  You will solve ticket discrepancies, assist handicap patrons, stuff programs, make sure the house temperature is comfortable, and direct evacuation in an emergency.  You will be required to attend every performance, but will be able to watch the show.
  • Make-up & Hair Design Coordinator—(One volunteer; approximately 10 hours) Work with the Costume Designer, and address the Parents’ Meeting to inform parents of make-up requirements for the show.  In charge of finding volunteers to help apply make-up to actors for each dress rehearsal and every performance. Teach performers how to apply make-up and arrange hair at first dress rehearsal. Actors will have to okay their make-up and hair with you during dress rehearsals before going on stage.
  • Make-up Artists—(Two or more volunteers for every night of dress rehearsal and for each performance; approximately 1 hour per stint) Help performers apply make-up and fix hair before every dress rehearsal and performance.
  • Musician—(approximately 30 hours)  Work with the Musical Director as an orchestra member.  You are required to attend orchestra rehearsals and be present at every performance.
  • Phone Tree/E-mail Volunteer—(One volunteer; approximately 1 hour) Work with the Show Coordinator to notify cast members and parents of changes in schedule or special announcements.
  • Prop Crew—(Two volunteers; approximately 10 hours)  Work with the Assistant Director to ensure all of the props for the production are supplied.
  • Publicity Volunteer—(Four volunteers; approximately 10 hours) Work with the Publicity Manager to get posters and flyers out to local businesses. You may also be required to sell ads for the program.
  • Rehearsal Supervisors—(Two volunteers every rehearsal; approximately 3 hours per stint) Two parents will be needed for each rehearsal to keep the cast in a central place, keep the actors quiet, make sure the cast picks-up after themselves, and make sure no one is left at the theatre alone after rehearsal.
  • Scholarship Manager—(One volunteer; approximately 10 hours) Work with the Parent’s Auxiliary President two weeks before auditions to process scholarship applications.  You will also keep the timecards of the program participants, and make they fulfill their contracts.
  • Set Builder—(Multiple volunteers; approximately 15 hours) Work with the Technical Director to help build the sets.
  • Set Painters—(Multiple volunteers; approximately 15 hours) Work with the Technical Director to help paint the sets.
  • Show Coordinator—(One volunteer; approximately 40 hours) Work with Parent Auxiliary President to ensure the volunteer positions are filled for each production.  This job requires a major time commitment and good managerial skills.
  • Stage Crew—(Six or more volunteers; approximately 40 hours)  Under the direction of the Stage Manager, help move sets and pull curtain for each rehearsal two weeks prior to the performance and for every performance. You will be required to wear black, comfortable clothes to every performance.
  • Strike Coordinator—(One volunteer; approximately 10 hours) Work with the Stage Manager, cast, and parent volunteers to make sure the set is taken down & stored properly, the rental costumes are given to the Costume Coordinator, the props are put away and the theatre/dressing rooms are left clean after the final performance of the production.
  • Ticket Promotions—(One volunteer; approximately 5 hours)  In charge of keeping track how many tickets each cast member has sold and notify the Show Coordinator of the top three ticket sellers every two weeks.
  • Ushers—(Four volunteers for each performance; approximately 2 hours per stint) Work under the House Manager. Usher duties include any of the following for each performance:  stuffing and passing out programs, light cleaning of the theatre, ticket taking, stage watching, and assisting at concession stands. You are required to be at the theater 45 minutes before showtime.  We will also need ushers for school shows, in which case the volunteer must be available in the daytime.
